Vegan, Seed Oil-Free Sunscreen

Vegan, Seed Oil-Free Sunscreen

If you want a sunscreen that is both vegan and seed oil-free, the market quietly asks you to pick one.

Most vegan formulas lean on seed oils or plant waxes to carry the zinc. Meanwhile, the seed oil-free trend has pushed the other way, toward tallow, which is rendered animal fat. So the vegan shopper who also wants to skip seed oils gets stuck between a formula full of the thing they are avoiding and a formula built on an animal product they will not use.

It is a real gap. "Vegan" and "seed oil-free" rarely live in the same bottle.

The solution

Swellies is both, without giving up either. It is vegan, it is seed oil-free, and it gets there with a plant-derived ester called coco caprylate/caprate as the carrier. An ester is not a seed oil and not an animal fat. It is a lightweight plant ingredient that carries the zinc oxide and absorbs without grease. That one choice is what lets the formula be vegan and seed oil-free at the same time. We go deeper on why the carrier is the whole story in our piece on seed oil-free sunscreen without the tallow.

The whole formula is five ingredients: zinc oxide, coco caprylate/caprate, dextrin palmitate, polyhydroxystearic acid, and iron oxides. Every one of them is plant or mineral derived. None of them is an animal product. None of them is a seed oil.

What vegan requires

Vegan means no animal-derived ingredients anywhere in the formula. In sunscreen, the animal ingredients that usually sneak in are:

  • Tallow, rendered animal fat, now common in the seed-oil-free trend
  • Beeswax, a thickener that also adds water resistance
  • Lanolin, derived from wool
  • Carmine, a red pigment made from insects

Swellies contains none of them. No tallow, no beeswax, no lanolin, no carmine. It is also free of fragrance, silicones, and preservatives, so the short list stays short.

How to read the label

If you want a sunscreen that is both vegan and seed oil-free, here is the quick check.

Look for:

  • Zinc oxide as the active
  • A plant-derived ester like coco caprylate/caprate as the carrier
  • A short ingredient list you can read top to bottom

Avoid:

  • Tallow, beeswax, lanolin (not vegan)
  • Sunflower, safflower, jojoba, and other seed or nut oils (not seed oil-free)

Common questions

Is Swellies vegan?

Yes. Every ingredient is plant or mineral derived, with no animal products of any kind.

Is it cruelty-free?

Yes. Vegan and no animal testing.

Is coco caprylate a seed oil?

No. It is a plant-derived ester, a different kind of ingredient. It carries the zinc and absorbs cleanly without being an oil.

Can a sunscreen be vegan and seed oil-free?

Yes. It comes down to the carrier. Swap seed oils and animal fats for a plant ester and you can have both. That is what Swellies does.

Does vegan mean weaker protection?

No. The protection comes from 21% non-nano zinc oxide, which covers UVA and UVB on its own. Vegan describes what is not in the formula, not how well it works.
