Mineral Sunscreen Without Silicones: How to Find One

Why most mineral sunscreens use silicone
Zinc oxide at a real protective level is a difficult ingredient. At 20 percent and up it is thick, it drags when you spread it, and it wants to sit on your skin as a white layer. Formulators have two ways to deal with that. Build the formula around ingredients that handle it, or add silicone.
Silicone is the fast option. It adds slip so the zinc spreads, it leaves a dry finish, and it helps keep the zinc particles from clumping. It works, it is inexpensive, and so it ends up in the majority of mineral sunscreens on the shelf, often two or three different silicones in one bottle.
Why people look for silicone-free
Read enough reviews and forum threads and the reasons repeat. Some people do not like the slick, coated feel. Some find silicone-heavy products pill when they layer them with skincare or makeup. Some want a short ingredient list they can read start to finish. Some avoid the cyclic silicones for environmental reasons.
For the record, dimethicone is an FDA-approved skin protectant, so this is not a safety argument. It is a preference, and a common one. If it is yours, the useful thing is knowing how to shop for it.
Three places silicone hides in a mineral sunscreen
"Mineral" on the front of a bottle describes the active ingredient. It says nothing about the other twenty. Silicone tends to show up in three spots.
- The base. The easy one to spot. Dimethicone and cyclopentasiloxane are often near the top of the inactive list, which means there is a lot of them.
- The texture and film formers. Further down the list and easier to miss: dimethicone crosspolymer, trimethylsiloxysilicate, caprylyl methicone. These control the finish and how the product sets.
- The zinc coating. The one almost nobody checks. Most cosmetic zinc oxide is surface-coated so it disperses evenly, and a very common coating is triethoxycaprylylsilane or dimethicone. That coating has to appear on the ingredient list, but it is usually buried mid-label under a name that does not look anything like "silicone." A formula can have a silicone-free base and still carry silicone on the active itself.

How to read a label for silicones
Flip the bottle to the inactive ingredients and look for these endings:
- -cone: dimethicone, cyclomethicone, phenyl trimethicone, caprylyl methicone
- -conol: dimethiconol
- -siloxane: cyclopentasiloxane, cyclohexasiloxane
- -silane: triethoxycaprylylsilane, the common zinc coating
- -siloxysilicate: trimethylsiloxysilicate
- Crosspolymers with "dimethicone" or "vinyl dimethicone" in the name
Two things that sound similar and are not silicones: silica and magnesium aluminum silicate. Those are a mineral and a clay. The exception is silica dimethyl silylate, which is silica treated with a silicone, so that one counts.

What replaces silicone in Swellies

Coco Caprylate/Caprate is the carrier, the thing the zinc rides in. It is an ester, not an oil and not a silicone, so it spreads light and does not leave a greasy film.
Dextrin Palmitate is built from a plant starch and a fatty acid. It gives the formula its gel structure and controls the finish, which is the job crosspolymers usually handle.
Polyhydroxystearic Acid is on the zinc itself. It keeps the particles separated so they lay down in an even film instead of clumping, and that even film is half of why there is no white cast. Iron Oxides handle the other half with a sheer tint.

The environmental piece
Silicone's backbone is silicon and oxygen rather than carbon, which is why it does not break down the way most organic ingredients do. The cyclic silicones get the most regulatory attention. The European Union has restricted D4 and D5 in rinse-off cosmetics since 2020, and from June 2027 the limit extends to D5 and D6 in leave-on products like sunscreen.
