Micro-Tint: How Japanese and Korean Sunscreen Cracked the Code for (Almost) Every Skin Tone
Mineral sunscreen has one famous problem: the white cast. For years it was treated as the price of using zinc oxide. Japanese and Korean formulators did not accept that. They solved it with a quiet piece of chemistry called micro-tint, and it is the reason a sheer mineral formula can now disappear on almost any skin tone.
Why zinc oxide leaves a white cast
Zinc oxide is a mineral. It sits on the surface of the skin and scatters light, which is exactly how it protects you. The side effect is that scattered light reads as white or gray, especially on medium and deep skin tones. Slather on a traditional mineral formula and you get the ghost look. That is not a flaw in zinc oxide. It is a flaw in the formula built around it.
The micro-tint fix
The fix is iron oxides: mineral pigments in red, yellow, and black. Used at foundation concentrations they give coverage. Used at a fraction of that, a micro-tint, they do something smarter.
