The Real Dangers of DIY Zinc Oxide Sunscreen

The recipe looks simple. Zinc oxide powder, a carrier oil or butter, mix, done. It reads like something you could obviously make yourself, which is exactly why it spreads.

We sent a version of it to an FDA approved lab. A formula with 25% zinc oxide, more than the amount in most commercial sunscreens, came back at SPF 7. Not 25. Not 30. Seven.

The ingredients were not the problem. The mixing was. Here is what goes wrong and why it matters.

Zinc oxide only works if it is spread evenly

Zinc oxide protects by covering skin and scattering UV away from it. That protection depends entirely on the particles forming a continuous, even layer. Every gap is unprotected skin.

Zinc powder does not want to disperse. It clumps. Stirring it into oil in a bowl leaves you with a suspension of clusters, not an even distribution. When you spread that on your face, you get thick spots surrounded by patches with almost nothing on them. The label in your head says 25% zinc. Your skin is getting something far less across most of its surface.

Commercial formulas use dedicated dispersing agents to solve this. In our formula that job belongs to polyhydroxystearic acid, and it is the difference between 25% zinc measuring SPF 7 and a properly dispersed formula measuring far higher.

You have no idea what your SPF is

SPF is not calculated from a percentage. It is measured on human skin under controlled UV exposure in a lab. There is no way to work it out from a recipe.

That means a DIY batch has no SPF number, no broad spectrum testing, and no water resistance data. You do not know how long it lasts, whether it covers UVA as well as UVB, or whether it survives sweat. You are guessing, and the feedback only arrives as sunburn hours later.

The false confidence is the real hazard

This is the part that does the damage. Someone who knows they have no sunscreen on seeks shade and covers up. Someone who believes they are wearing SPF 25 stays out longer, reapplies less, and gets more UV exposure than they would have with nothing at all.

An underperforming sunscreen is worse than no sunscreen, because it changes behavior without delivering protection.

Handling the raw powder

Loose zinc oxide powder aerosolizes easily. Inhaling it is an irritant to the airways, and there is no reason to take that on in a kitchen with no ventilation controls. Commercial manufacturing handles powdered actives under conditions a home setup does not have.

Water makes it worse

Any DIY recipe involving water, aloe, or hydrosol creates something that grows bacteria and mold. Without a preservative system and stability testing, a homemade water containing product has a short and unpredictable safe life. Anhydrous formulas avoid that problem, which is one reason ours has no water in it at all.

The same active, formulated properly

Nothing here is an argument against zinc oxide. It is a good active, it is the one we use, and it is the only one in our formula.

Swellies is 21% non-nano zinc oxide with four supporting ingredients whose entire job is making that zinc work: dispersing it evenly, turning it into a breathable gel, and cancelling the white it leaves behind. Broad spectrum SPF 46, water resistant 40 minutes, tested at an independent lab rather than estimated from a recipe.

Five ingredients is about as close to a DIY ingredient list as a tested sunscreen gets. The difference is that the formulation and the testing happened.

One honest note. People make their own sunscreen for reasonable motives: wanting a short ingredient list, distrust of long ones, wanting to know exactly what is going on their skin. Those are fair. The gap is that sun protection is one of the few things in a skincare routine that cannot be verified by reading the label. It has to be measured.

Frequently asked questions

Does homemade zinc oxide sunscreen work?

Poorly. We tested a homemade formula containing 25% zinc oxide at an FDA approved lab and it returned SPF 13, dropping to SPF 7 after water resistance testing. The zinc was present but not evenly dispersed, which leaves gaps in coverage. Hand mixing cannot achieve the dispersion that dedicated formulation agents provide.

Can you calculate SPF from the percentage of zinc oxide?

No. SPF is measured on human skin in a controlled lab test, not derived from concentration. Two formulas with identical zinc percentages can measure very different SPF depending on particle size, dispersion, and the base.

Is it dangerous to make your own sunscreen?

The main risk is inadequate protection combined with the belief that you are protected, which leads to longer exposure and sunburn. Handling loose zinc oxide powder is also a respiratory irritant, and any recipe containing water can grow bacteria without a preservative system.

Why does zinc oxide need a dispersing agent?

Zinc oxide particles clump together. Clumps mean thick spots and bare gaps rather than the continuous even layer that UV protection requires. Dispersing agents keep the particles separated and evenly spread across the skin.

Is a five ingredient sunscreen the same as homemade?

No. A short ingredient list and an untested one are different things. Every ingredient in a tested formula is there for a specific function, and the finished product goes through SPF, broad spectrum, and water resistance testing that a homemade batch never receives.
